What is PII redaction?

PII redaction removes identity from information before it is shared.

It finds personal or sensitive details and replaces them with neutral labels. The surrounding text stays readable, which makes redacted content useful for AI prompts, support analysis, research, debugging, and collaboration.

PII redaction FAQ

Questions, answered plainly.

Clear information about how the current product works, what it detects, and where its limits are.

01What is personally identifiable information (PII)?+

Personally identifiable information is data that can identify, contact, or distinguish a person. Examples include names, email addresses, phone numbers, home addresses, identity numbers, and financial identifiers.

02What is PII redaction?+

PII redaction is the process of finding personal information and removing or replacing it before the surrounding content is shared. PII Cleaner uses readable labels such as [EMAIL_1] so useful context remains intact.

03Does PII Cleaner upload or store my text?+

No. The free text cleaner runs locally in your browser. The text you paste is not uploaded to PII Cleaner, stored in a database, or used to train a model.

04Which types of sensitive data can it detect?+

The current version detects names in common introduction patterns, email addresses, phone numbers, street addresses, credit card numbers, IBANs, several structured national ID formats, IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, and common API key formats.

05Can I use it before sending text to an AI assistant?+

Yes. PII Cleaner is designed to create safer AI prompts by replacing personal details while preserving the meaning and structure an AI assistant needs to respond usefully.

06Is PII Cleaner free?+

Yes. Browser-based text redaction is free and does not require an account. Paid file, batch, team, and API workflows are planned for Pro and Team plans.

07Can I redact PDFs, documents, or CSV files?+

Not in the current free release. PDF, DOCX, CSV, image, and batch redaction are planned for the Pro plan. The live tool currently processes pasted text only.

08Does automatic detection guarantee every piece of PII is removed?+

No automatic detector is infallible. PII Cleaner reduces accidental exposure, but you should review the cleaned output before sharing high-risk, regulated, or legally sensitive information.
